Baby boom

2011 surprised us with a gorilla baby boom, with no fewer than five babies in one year. This year, it seems the whole park is bursting with babies.

Within a short period of time, a large number of babies were born. Barbary macaque Lina even became a motherandgrandmother in the space of four days!

Ring-tailed lemurs

Ring-tailed lemur Tumbo kicked off the baby boom at Apenheul by giving birth to twins. Sadly, one of her babies died shortly after. However, soon after, more babies were born to three other ring-tailed lemurs. These little ones have since started exploring the world around them and are taking their first steps away from their mothers. Great fun to see!

Squirrel monkeys

The birth season of squirrel monkeys is such that all babies are born within a few weeks of each other. This year, we are expecting some 20 to 25 babies! So as you can imagine, things are pleasantly hectic around these funny, curious monkeys. The babies can be seen straight after birth. What’s more, you get to see them from up close because in Apenheul, you walk free among these monkeys!

Barbary macaques

There is also lots of baby joy among the Barbary macaques. Barbary macaque Lina gave birth to a little one in May and a few days later, her daughter Noura also gave birth to a healthy baby. So in the space of one week, Lina became both a mother and a grandmother. In addition, anotherlittle one was born to the group. The Barbary macaques, too, run free among visitors. They are the biggest free-roaming apes at Apenheul.

Even more babies

Baby monkeys were also born to the red-bellied lemurs and yellow-breasted capuchins. And it doesn’t stop there, this year many more apes and monkeys are expecting babies. Visit them all and swing on by to Apenheul soon!
